I’ve given gum and mints on numerous occasions, but this person just doesn’t get the hint. Ahhh…. what to do?

Try to make light of the situation in a friendly way. Ive had the bad fortune to encounter one such person and the way to deal with it is to suggest now and again that theres some kind of funny smell and hopefully get them self conscious, even go so far as to jokingly (i strongly emphasise that word) suggest it might be them and order them to do something about it, this should do the trick and isnt likely to get them angry at you so much as more surprised at the poor quality of their own hygiene. Hope this helps

Secretly place an entire bag full of gum and tic-tacs and/or mouthwash on their desk, or in their bag, etc.

I offer the mints and after they take one I say “Please take two, we’ve all had this problem at one time or another.” They almost always say “Oh do I have bad breathe?” and that’s your opportunity to be frank, but kind at the same time.

Telling a colleague can be interesting. First you need to know that all people have some amount of bad breath, however, very few of us can smell our own bad breath. The majority of bad breath comes from the top of the tongue where bacteria grow and produce compounds that smell or from foods, such as garlic, or liquids or from smoking. All of these collect on the top of the tongue. The cure for bad breath includes brushing and flossing the teeth and cleaning the top of the tongue. Use a tongue cleaner that has both a brush and a scraper. One way to tell your colleague about their bad breath is to buy them an OraBrush along with a note to check out They will get the message. Mints, gums or mouthwash will only cover up bad breath for a short time. I believe you want your colleague to cure bad breath not just cover it up.
